Superfood Powder

Hi everyone! I was at the store yesterday in the health food section and noticed a wide variety of powders. Fiber powder, protein powder, probiotic powders, vitamin supplement drink powders, the list goes on. I also noticed a variety of powders that were labeled “superfood” powders and there were about five different ones labeled “superfood”. I have heard of some of the individual superfood supplements before and after doing some research I was pleasantly surprised with the study outcomes of the supplement claims. That’s not to say that these supplements will work for everyone or that all brands of these supplements are safe. It is always important to keep yourself informed on dietary supplement and to look past the health claims on the label. Before starting a dietary supplement remember to always consult with your physician because some dietary supplements interact with certain medications.

I did a brief search on the claims on some of the more common superfood supplements and here is what I found:

Moringa Powder: This supplement has a peppery flavor and is packed full of iron, vitamin A, and antioxidants which makes it great for boosting the immune system and lowering blood pressure.

Maca Powder: May help promote sleep and is a good source of vitamin C, iron, copper, potassium, vitamin B6, and manganese.

Ashwagandha Powder: This supplement may help lower blood sugar levels, is packed full of antioxidants, it may lower the stress hormone cortisol, decrease depression and anxiety, it may decrease inflammation, and lower cholesterol levels.

Curcumin Powder: I have talked about this supplement before. Also a component of turmeric, curcumin may help decrease inflammation, may have antioxidant properties, may help improve brain function, it may decrease risk of heart disease, and may also lower blood sugar levels. For more information of curcumin.

Schisandra Powder: May help improve Alzheimer’s symptoms, may help reduce severity of some liver diseases, it may have an antidepressant effect, and it may help reduce stress.

I think that one of the draws to these powder supplements is that they are a lot easier to swallow than a pill. They are simple to take because you can sprinkle them onto a salad, into soup, bake them into various baked goods, add it into a smoothie, stir it into yogurt or applesauce, or even mixing it into a salad dressing. I know I personally dread swallowing a pill, so the powders are definitely more appealing to me. I do think that there is something to the health claims of these supplements, but I would not rely on them as the single solution to the problem. Instead look at them as a supplement to the bigger plan to help the problem. Again, always talk with your physician first before trying any dietary supplement. Follow their prescribed plan and ask if adding of a dietary supplement would be beneficial. In the mean time it is always interesting to see what manufacturers will come up with next in regards to health foods and dietary supplements!
