Summer Produce

As of Friday, June 21st, it is officially summer!! It’s hard to pick a favorite season because there is just something so special about each of them. My favorite parts of summer are the warm (or hot) weather, swimming, longer days, and a wide variety of fresh produce! Speaking of, today we spent the day at the lake and had a cookout. I got a nice sunburn while we were eating our hamburgers and watermelon...oops! Remembering to apply sunscreen when it is overcast and 70 degrees outside is not my strong suit.

I like to try to eat my produce when it is in season because it is cheaper, and it tastes fresher. If you’re lucky, you may even live close enough to a farm where they allow you to go pick your own produce! Growing up, we lived close to a few blueberry farms and every summer we would wake up early and head out to pick our berries. It always seemed to take forever to fill our buckets because our berry picking turned into a “pick one, eat two” situation. There were also a few peach and strawberry farms where you buy their fresh peaches and strawberries already picked. I would love to live somewhere where we could get really fresh produce like that again!

I have mentioned a few fruits that are in season during the summer and this list includes those that I have mentioned and a few more!

  • Peaches

  • Watermelon

  • Plums

  • Figs

  • Blueberries

  • Strawberries

  • Tomatoes

  • Corn

  • Eggplant

  • Zucchini

  • Summer squash

  • Basil

Here are some recipes to make the most of this season’s produce:

Zucchini – Bruschetta chicken with Zoodles

Strawberries - Strawberry Salsa, Mixed Berry Infused Water

Blueberries - Mixed Berry Infused Water
