Mediterranean Diet Week 3: Beverages

Water is the beverage of choice for the Mediterranean Diet. Our bodies require a significant amount of water each day so drinking ~8 cups of water a day will help your body stay hydrated. The amount of water you should drink a day will vary depending on how active you are and the temperature outside. The more active you are the more water you will need and the warmer it is outside the more water you will need. Keeping a reusable water bottle close by throughout the day will help remind you to drink more. Other great beverage options for the Mediterranean Diet are unsweetened coffee and tea.

A glass or two of red wine each day is also promoted on the Mediterranean Diet. Encouraging alcohol consumption is a controversial topic in the healthcare world because of the link between excessive alcohol consumption and health risks. However, anything in excess is a bad thing. Alcohol in moderation has been linked with a decreased risk of heart disease and improved memory, especially red wine. This is because of an antioxidant called resveratrol that is found in grapes.

A serving of red wine is considered 5 oz and it is recommended that women have no more than one serving (5 oz) of alcohol a day and that men have no more than 2 servings (10 oz) of alcohol a day. If you have a personal history or a family history of alcohol abuse, if you are unable to limit your alcohol intake, or if you have liver disease or heart disease, you should refrain from drinking wine or any other alcohol.
