New Year’s is only a week and a half away and then we will be in a whole new decade! I can’t hardly believe it! With so much change in the air this time of year, one thing that stays the same is the New Year’s resolution to lose weight or to get healthier. We make these health goals every January 1st but then we somehow forget about these goals and we slowly creep back into our old habits.
Why is that??
It’s probably because you aren’t setting the appropriate goals to stay on track. Setting goals is the first step to actually reaching them, but you have to set goals correctly. Yes, you read that right. There is a more correct way to set health goals to help direct you and add motivation. Goals, when set correctly, are also a great way for you to measure your success!
So how to you set goals so that you actually achieve them?? First, you need to have a long-term goal in mind and then break-up your long-term goal into smaller, more manageable short-term goals. Once you’ve done that you need to turn them into S.M.A.R.T. Goals.
S = specific
M = measurable
A = achievable
R = realistic
T = timely
What do you want? Do you want to lose weight? That’s great! But how much weight. Having a goal that you want to lose weight is very vague and will leave you confused and unsure of when you have actually reached your goal. Having a specific weight loss goal, such as you want to lose 50 lbs, is more specific. This specific goal will let you know when you have reached your goal and will create extra motivation for you to reach it because you know exactly where you are going.
This can be broken down into your long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals are generally the end result you want to see and lasts several months to years. Short-term goals are the steppingstones to you reaching your long-term goals. These goals typically last weeks to a couple of months.
Make sure you can realistically achieve your goals. This is how you avoid setting yourself up for failure. If you have the goal of losing 20 lbs in 30 days, you will likely not achieve this goal and end up discouraged. Instead, create a goal where you lose 20 lbs in 6 months. Because this goal is more realistic you are more likely to achieve it.
What time frame can you realistically achieve your goal?? This goes along with the example above. If you give yourself too short of a deadline, you will likely get discouraged and give up since you are not progressing as quickly as you thought. Set yourself up for success with a realistic time frame.
Now get busy setting those S.M.A.R.T. Goals for 2020 and start this new decade ahead of the game!
