Fire Up the Grill

What are the chances that April Fools Day landed on a Monday this year?? Biggest April Fools Joke ever! I personally don't get into the April Fool's Day pranks too much, but I did when I was younger! The most memorable April Fool's Day prank that was played on me was by my parents when I was about 8 years old. They came bursting into mine and my brother's rooms freaking out asking why we weren't up yet and that we were going to be late for school! Being the punctual person that I was, even at 8 years old, I panicked and immediately got up and started rushing to get ready for the day. Once my brother and I had gotten up, grabbed a breakfast bar, and had our school things all together, our parents shouted out "APRIL FOOLS!!!" was Saturday. So here my brother and I were awake early on a Saturday ready to go nowhere. I honestly don't remember what we did the rest of the day, if anything at all, but it was definitely a day to remember!

In the spirit of spring and the upcoming month of April, my husband and I decided to bust out the grill and grill some surf and turf kabobs. Kabobs typically consist of meat and vegetables. If you select a low fat steak, shrimp, chicken, or even tofu, kabobs can make a balanced and healthy meal. We added a slice of french bread for a starch for our meal, but you can also do fruit salad, a couscous salad, grilled potato foil pack, or grilled corn on the cob.

Here is the recipe I used to make my kabobs! I hope you enjoy!

Teriyaki Surf and Turf Kabobs


  • 2 sirloin steaks

  • 1 package of shrimp

  • 1 green bell pepper

  • 1 pint of cherry tomatoes

  • 1 medium onion

  • 1 16 oz bottle of honey teriyaki marinade


1. Dice sirloin steaks into 1.5" squares and place in a shallow storage container. Cover with marinade. Shell shrimp, if not pre-shelled, and place in a separate shallow container. Cover with marinade. Cover both containers with a lid and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

2. While meat is marinading, wash produce. Chop bell pepper and onion into 1.5" chunks. Set aside until meat is done marinading. If the meat is going to marinate longer than 30 minutes, place chopped produce in a covered container and place in refrigerator until ready to assemble kabobs.

3. Get grill pre-heating on medium-high heat. When ready to assemble the kabobs, place the meat and vegetables on the skewers. I like to rotate meat, vegetable, meat, vegetable. *NOTE: If using wooden skewers, don't forget to soak them ~30 minutes prior to cooking.

4. Place the kabobs on the grill and close the lid. Cook for about 6-7 minutes. Take the kabobs off the grill and place cooked kabobs on a clean plate and enjoy!
