5 Reasons Why Your Diet isn’t Working Part 2

Welcome to Week #2 in this 5-part blog series on 5 Reasons Why Your Diet isn’t Working. In case you missed it, last week we talked about reason #1 why your diet isn’t working, and that reason is that you are not eating enough calories. If you missed it, check it out HERE.

Reason #2: You are not exercising, or you are exercising too much.

Our bodies were made to move. I always feel a million times better when I am exercising regularly than when I have not exercised in a while. My energy is up and I am ready to tackle the day! We need to move, especially when trying to lose weight, boost confidence, or want more energy. If you rely on diet alone for weight loss, you will have to create a greater calorie deficit by eating even less food. Refer to reason #1 for more information on why this is hurting your weight loss goals.

Not exercising regularly can slow down your metabolism, and it can also contribute to more muscle loss than fat loss. Exercising regularly will help balance out the muscle to fat loss ratio and allow more fat to be burned than muscle, which is what we want. It will also increase your metabolism, which will allow you to be able to eat more food throughout the day while still contributing to a calorie deficit. I don’t know about you, but that is reason enough for me to exercise!

On the other hand, you can have too much of a good thing. There is such a thing as exercising too much. Exercising too much looks different for everyone, but this is the fast track to a quick burn out. Exercise is a form of stress on your body, but when done correctly it has huge benefits to your body. However, if overdone, your body can go into a stress response and be more likely to hold onto fat rather than burn it. It can also cause you to feel sluggish and worn down, especially if you are not eating enough to support the level of activity you are doing.

With all things health and wellness, it is important to find balance and listen to your body. Activity levels will differ from person to person. What works for someone else may not work for you, and that’s okay. Just keep trying and keep showing up every day for yourself.
